Last year, food bank visits in the GTA rose by 51 per cent compared to the year before. Poverty is the main reason why people experience food insecurity, and not everyone is impacted equally: women, Indigenous peoples and racialized communities, people with disabilities, and recent immigrants are more likely to be affected. Choosing between food, rent, transportation, childcare, and other costs may mean skipping meals or going for days without eating. This has a tremendous impact on physical and mental health and well-being.
At United Way Greater Toronto, we aim to transform communities into places with strong, vibrant and connected local food systems where all residents have access to culturally relevant and healthy food.
